Sunbed Risk
Are sunbeds really bad for you?
The simple, and only answer is: YES!
Every year, there are 16,744 NEW cases of melanoma (skin cancer) in the UK.
Of course, sunbathing in natural daylight is the main culprit for the majority of sufferers, but the increased intensity of UV radiation from sunbeds is a needless added element in the fight against cancer.
There is a reason why it’s illegal for people under the age of 18 to use or even be around sunbeds, and why there is even a Sunbeds Regulation Act (2010):
The “base tan” sunbed risk
For a while now, there has been a trend for achieving a “base tan” before going on holiday in the hopes that it will decrease the risk of burning. In reality, this base tan can only achieve up to SPF 4. The recommended minimum is SPF15.
The truth is that any skin darkening due to UV exposure is a sign of damage- your skin is responding to the harmful UV radiation and trying to protect you. If you can see your skin changing colour in the sun or under a sunbed, damage is already happening.
Coupled with these distressing facts is the knowledge that by first tanning on a sunbed and then tanning in the sun, you are creating potentially double the damage. The only way to protect from sunburn is with a high SPF sunscreen.
The symptoms of sun damage can include hyper pigmentation of the skin, creating a patchy/uneven appearance of skin tone, coarser and more wrinkly skin texture and ultimately cancer.
How can I tan safely without sunbed risk?
Protecting and embracing your natural skintone is the safest option to avoid potential health risks and premature aging. However, if you long for a glow that you can show off throughout the summer, your best option is to use a good quality home tanning mousse such as Eden Tanning Self Tan Mousse, or finding a skilled, professional spray tanner that uses a solution with added skincare benefits, such as Eden Tanning Professional Spray Tan Solutions. All Eden Tanning products contain cancer fighting anti-oxidants and toning ingredients, leaving skin perfectly bronzed without the harmful effects of UV rays.
Here are a few tips for safe bronzing during the sunny season:
- NEVER USE SUNBEDS! Apply home tan products or have regular spray tans using skin nourishing ingredients and then…
- Use high SPF sunscreen (30 or higher is preferable) and reapply often throughout the day
- Avoid the hottest sun (between 11am and 3pm in the UK) and stay hydrated even in the shade to avoid heat stroke
- Wear loose, long sleeved clothing, hat and sunglasses
- Stay in the shade as much as possible
